Assessment Cycle 1: Formative Assessment
Day 5: Reading notebooks leads to responsive teaching
Challenge: Figure out how to make the time you spend reading through your students’ notebooks more meaningful. Think about using a checklist or taking anecdotal notes to help you keep track of what your students are doing well, as a group, or what you need to focus on more during your instruction based on your close reading of their notebooks.
What do your students, by and large, do well as writers?
What’s challenging for them as a class?
How has the checklist or anecdotal note taking helped you assess your students’ needs and plan for instruction that responds to what you’ve learned about them from reading their notebooks?
