Conferring Cycle 2: Peer Conferring

Day 3: Writer to writer

Challenge: Schedule a mini-lesson that focuses explicitly on teaching students to speak as one writer to another. Consider the best way to approach this instruction based on the needs of your students. Options for a mini-lesson of this nature include modeling a peer conference with another teacher who you are able to talk with as one writer to another; asking two of your students who speak as writers to modes; or creating an anchor chart highlighting key conversational moves writers make when responding to one another.

What common phrases do you use in your conferences when responding to students’ writing that could be useful to your students as they respond to one another?

How can you help students focus on the meaning of their writing rather than the “stuff” of revision?
